Příběhy o Mount Tangkuban Perahu

This folklore from West Java tells the story of a Sangkuriang who married hisown mother namedDayang Sumbi. A mother who knew she was about to marry her child had a demand to frustrate the marriage.

But unexpectedly, his son agreed to a request where to dam the river and build a boat before morning came. The work done by Sangkuriang was quickly completed thanks to the help of the jinn.

Dayang Sumbai, seeing this, racked his brains to do a way to prevent the work from being completed. Therefore, he rolled out a silk cloth so that it looked like morning, such a state caused the chicken crow to think that morning had come.

However, Sangkuriang had not finished his work at that time, so he was angry because his proposal was rejected by his own mother. Therefore, he vented his anger by kicking the boat that was made. The ship eventually bent down to become a mountain that is currently known as the Tangkuban perahu.

Stories of origin from the city of Bandung

Another folklore from West Java is about the origin of the city of Bandung. The story begins with a rivalry between Jake and a hero who is a student at one of the universities. Where the nature of the two is opposite, but they complement each other, so that they are like brothers.

However, conflicts begin to appear when they like the same woman, Sekar, who is the daughter of their teacher. Jake, who has a pretty face, eventually asks for Sekar, but his father accepts the proposal without his consent.

But in fact, Sekar likes Wira, so in order to gently reject the proposal, he makes a contest where he marries a person who can extinguish the lahars of tangkuban ships. Eventually, Jaka and Wira were looking for a way to win the competition, but Jaka couldn’t really do it.

But he agreed, but after wandering yak instead of looking for a way to extinguish the lava, he played around. However, it is different from what Wira did in different ways to extinguish the lava. Until finally he saw a beaver who had made the dam out of wood.

This eventually led him to find a way to extinguish the lava. Eventually, Wira dammed the Citarum River by knocking down a hill to stop the river water until it finally extinguished the lava on Mount Tangkuban.

So in the end, he turns the basin into a lake. Eventually, Wira and Sekar finally married and had children. However, after many years, the dam that was created collapsed due to the fact that the flow of water increased, so the water in the lake dried up.

As a result, a country appeared that had free land, which caused many people to move to a new place. Eventually, the new place became the city of Bandung, whose name was taken from a dam or weir. This is a West Javanese folk tale  that many people still do not know.

 Folklór o Lutung Kasarung

No less interesting is the folklore from West Java about Lutung Kasarung, where it tells the story of a princess named Purbasari, who meets a greedy prince who is cursed to be a monkey. Princess Purbasari herself was fired by her brother because she was used in such a way that she seemed to be afflicted with a skin disease.

Cerita people of West Java langur kasarung.   It was because of his illness that he was thrown into the forest to meet a langur. Langur, who really likes purbasari, finally prayed to the Almighty that a lake would appear, the water of which could heal the skin of the akita foam.

After his skin disease was cured, he was finally taken back to the palace, but the princess’s sister, Purbararang, became jealous and feared that her power would be taken back by Purbasari. Finally, the elder brother asked the king to hold a competition, namely a competition in fast cooking and hair length.

In both races, the younger brother was the winner, so the older brother eventually asked the king to create a new race to determine who the winner was. The race is about who is the better looking partner.

Finally, Purbasari brought a langur and introduced him as his partner, but the elder brother mocked him because his partner was a monkey. As a result of grief, he finally prayed to the Almighty to restore his former form, and then he was granted.

At the end of this West Javanese folklore,  Purbasari became the victor, so he was entitled to be a royaldreamer, and his brother Pürbarararang was not punished, although he was found guilty and lost.

Folklore about Nini Reef

Another West Javanese folklore is  no less interesting about the Nini cliff, where the story begins with a husband and wife whose name can be blessed by children. To satisfy daily needs, the husband will go to sea, and in the morning he will go home with the catch, which will be eaten alone or sold.

One day, however, the husband was allowed to go to sea, but until the morning the husband had not yet returned home. The woman panicked, so she went to find her husband along with other villagers. But one day, the wife who finally gave up prayed to the Almighty that the Almighty would see her again.

But suddenly a rock appeared, in which someone said that the stone is the embodiment of the husband. Finally, the surprised wife prayed to the Almighty to be turned into a rock like her husband.

Of course, the two stones are placed next to each other, which can still be seen today on the coast of Nini’s cliff. Therefore, there are many lessons that can be drawn from the above story about the loyalty of a wife to her husband. It is therefore very important that the young generation knows this West Javanese folklore  . Thus, there are many lessons that can be learned and can be applied in everyday life.
